QUESTIONS FOR TEENS IN HANOVER
"THE GREAT LITTLE TOWN WITH NOTHING TO
DO"
1. If you could make one new "place to go
with something to do" appear downtown right now by magic, what would it
be? Second and third choices?
2. What are the reasons there isn't more
"stuff to do" for teens?
3. Would you help build, maintain or
operate some kind of new place for teens to hang out? How many hours a week would you volunteer?
4. Would your family and friends help to
build, maintain or operate some kind of new place for teens to hang out? How many hours a week?
5. What would you stop doing (or do less of, or
do differently) that you're doing now if there were something else to do in
town?
6. Whose job is it to create places to go with
things to do for teens here?
7. What kind of place do you think would cost
the least money to create? The most
money? How long would it take? What could be done quickest?
8. Are you willing to accept personal
responsibility for your own and everyone else's good behavior and safe conduct
at some new place?
9. Who do you know that may be interested in
making something new happen? Will you
ask them if they have any ideas?
10. What can government, schools, nonprofits and
the business community do to help create more places to go and things to do?
Please return this electronic Word or text file with your responses to JTSpangler@gmail.com with the subject line TEEN SURVEY for review and use by the "Friends of Downtown". We promise not to share your email address or spam you. Thanks for your time and ideas!

2. What form of letter should I use? Nothing gets an elected official's attention more than a neatly and legibly handwritten
letter. Typed or printed letters may be in a general form of business
letter below. Council Members do not have official e-mail addresses (but maybe they should, like the School Board).
Going to a public Council meeting, introducing yourself at the
appropriate time, and handing your letter to the Member will have even more impact than sending it in the mail. The Evening Sun covers Council meetings and you should bring a copy for their reporter if you want to share your letter with the public.
The Borough Council meeting schedule for the rest of 2011 is:
Wednesday, September 28
Wednesdays, October 12 and 26
Wednesday, November 9 and Tuesday, November 22
Wednesdays, December 14 and 28
Meetings begin at 7:30.
Citizen comments are normally early in the agenda.
3. How do I make my point best? KISS-- Keep It Simple and Short. Three or four paragraphs tops, as in the sample letter below. (1) Who I am and what Ward I'm in. (2) What I'm writing about. (3) Why I'm asking for your help (the "ask"). (4) When I'd like to hear from you ... and _always_ ending with a "Thank you".

These
are excellent concerts in a beautiful sanctuary. Try to attend and
make your free-will offering as soon as you can. Then take some extra
time to rediscover historic Downtown Hanover before or
after the music, and let businesses know they have something you like
which the Big Box Stores on the Boulevard of the Cars don't offer.
